Accessibility and the keyboard
Editor docs
Every panel of the editor can be reached and used from the keyboard. Every control has a name, progress is announced, one focus ring is used everywhere, text meets WCAG AA contrast, and motion follows the system's reduced-motion setting. The editor is a preview.
Preview: this pass shipped on 3 November 2026, and the toolbars, the Assets list box and the Tilemap keys on 4 November. Its ARIA was checked by reading the code; nothing has been tried with a screen reader (VoiceOver or NVDA) yet.
Keyboard map#
On macOS, Cmd replaces Ctrl.
| Where | Keys |
|---|---|
| Dock | Tab reaches a group's current tab. ← →, Home and End move between tabs. Enter or Space shows the panel. Delete closes it. F6 and Shift+F6 move to the next or previous group. |
| Hierarchy | ↑ ↓, Page Up/Down, Home and End move. Shift extends the selection. → expands, ← collapses or goes to the parent. Enter or F2 renames, Space toggles active, Escape clears. Delete and Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V and Ctrl+D work on the selection. |
| Assets | Folder tree: ↑ ↓, Home and End move. → expands or enters a folder, ← collapses or goes to the parent. Enter selects. Tiles: a list box with one tab stop; ← → ↑ ↓ move the selection by a tile or a row, Home and End go to the first and last tile, Enter opens the selected one. Shift+F10 or the Menu key opens the context menu. |
| Tilemap | The map is one tab stop. ← → ↑ ↓ move a cursor cell, drawn over the map; Enter or Space paints it with the current tool. With the rectangle, the first press anchors it, the arrows span it and the second press paints it; Pick picks the cell's tile; Escape drops a rectangle in progress. |
| Console | ↑ ↓, Page Up/Down, Home and End move the selection. Enter opens its file:line, Escape clears the selection. |
| Inspector, Settings, Material, Build | Native fields and buttons in document order; the Build panel's action rows are toolbars, as below. In the JSON editor, Ctrl+Enter applies and Escape reverts. |
| Toolbars | The Scene strip's gizmo, frame and grid toolbars, the Game panel's play controls, the Assets toolbar and the Build panel's rows are each one tab stop: ← → move between buttons and wrap, Home and End jump to the ends. A text field or slider in a toolbar keeps its own tab stop. |
| Scene, Game | Ctrl+G shows or hides the grid. The scene view is a named picture that says where its actions are (the Hierarchy and the strip); the views take their own keys once focused. |
Dialogs (New Script, New Project, Set Up Agents, Rename and Move) keep Tab and Shift+Tab inside them, close on Escape and give the focus back to the control that opened them. Menus (the Hierarchy's +, the Assets context menu, an Inspector component's ⋯) focus their first item, move with the arrow keys, Home and End, and close on Escape. For the menu shortcuts, see Editing scenes and Play mode.
Focus, contrast and motion#
- Focus ring. One 2 px ring in the brand's flame colour, drawn inset on menu, list, tree and tab items.
- Contrast. Every text colour pair passes 4.5:1. Build targets and formats marked unavailable stay dimmed below it, which WCAG allows for inactive controls.
- Motion. Transitions and animations run only when the system does not ask for reduced motion.
- Live text. The status bar's type-check and import counts, the Console's line count, the install banner and the build status are announced as they change.
Not yet#
- Panels cannot be moved to another group from the keyboard.
- From inside a panel, Shift+Tab or F6 are the only ways back to its tab strip.
- In the Assets list box, selection follows focus: arrowing onto a material opens it in the Material panel, as a click does.
- In a large asset folder only the rows in view are drawn; a focused tile the mouse wheel scrolls out of view loses the focus.
- The Atlas sheet and the Sprite Animation preview are named pictures, with the sheet's frames or the clip's frame in their names, but nothing on them is reachable by keyboard.
- The toolbars, the list box and the Tilemap cursor have not been checked by eye yet.
